Make your own plant-based drinks (e.g. soya milk, oat milk, hemp milk...)

Make your own plant-based drinks (e.g. soya milk, oat milk, hemp milk...)

Plant-based alternatives to milk are easy to make yourself. Freshly prepared whenever you like, every day!

Using your favourite ingredient (soya, cashews, almonds, oats, etc.), you can make a fresh, plant-based and lactose-free alternative to milk with minimal preparation.

Ingredients / Equipment:

  • 100g organic soya beans, cashews, almonds or whatever you prefer
  • A good blender (e.g. Vitamix)
  • Cheesecloth
  • 1 litre of water

Method:

Soak dried organic grains, nuts or organic soya beans overnight (at least 10 to 12 hours) in plenty of water. Then drain and rinse well.

Blend with one litre of fresh water on a high setting. Strain the mixture through the cheesecloth and squeeze out well. Caution: hot!

If you are making soya milk, you should boil the raw soya milk before consumption to deactivate the lectins*. To do this, heat your milk slowly whilst stirring constantly and let it simmer for approx. 15 minutes.
If you want to make raw-food-grade soya milk, you can also let your soya beans sprout for 3–4 days after soaking – this also deactivates a large proportion of the lectins*.

Sweeten or flavour your plant-based drink to taste and store it in the fridge until ready to drink.

*Lectins
Why you should deactivate lectins: Lectins can cause the intestinal wall to become porous (leaky gut syndrome). In healthy people, small amounts of lectins are usually harmless. As with many things in nutrition, it is the dose that makes the poison. There is evidence to suggest that lectins, when consumed in ‘normal’ amounts (small quantities such as those naturally found in tomatoes, cashews, etc.), can help prevent colon cancer. In larger quantities, however, they can damage the intestinal wall.

Tips and suggestions:

Use a good high-performance blender (not a hand blender) such as a Vitamix to make really delicious plant-based milk.

You can use, for example:

  • Organic soya beans
  • Organic nuts (almonds, cashews, macadamia, etc.)
  • Organic oats
  • Organic hemp
  • Organic coconut
  • Organic rice

If you like, you can sweeten your plant-based drink to taste. Click here for our sweeteners.

Your plant-based milk will keep in the fridge for about 1 week. If the ‘milk’ separates after a while, simply give it a good shake. As it contains no additives, this can happen from time to time.
